Blog: P2P

Computer networks allow you to share information with friends, family, co-workers and customers. Network file sharing is the process of copying data files from one computer to another using a live network connection. Before the Internet and online networks became popular, data files were often shared using cd and dvd disks or usb sticks. Nowadays, networks give you more flexible options.
File sharing by itself is not necessarily piracy. You are permitted to make a copy of most things for personal use. Access it from multiple devices, you could even say you can legally share something within your physical household and not have to worry about piracy. However, in general, file sharing is actually an individual giving away something that they had no hand in creating "for free". This is called P2P File sharing. In peer-to-peer sharing, you use a software program instead of your web browser to locate computers that have the file you want and then download it. P2P File sharing often illegally share films, music, books. and so on. As I read in the article Should Online Scofflaws Be Denied Web Access?: "The United States Congress held hearings last week on the growing problem of piracy, which the American entertainment industry says accounts for the loss of $20 billion a year in sales". The most popular peer-to-peer file sharing websites are BitTorrent. uTorrent. The Pirate Bay. But be careful,  P2P file sharing can subject you to spyware, viruses, Trojan horses, worms and identity theft.
